The theme of Earth Day 2023, “Invest in Your Future,” underscores the importance that the planet’s future depends on the changes and investments we make today. Over the last year, Juniper Networks has embarked on turning green ideas into full-fledged initiatives. Making these up-front investments to dedicated time and resources can enhance product sustainability and customer satisfaction. This Earth Day, we’re shining the spotlight on two such initiatives, one designed for energy savings and the other to reduce e-waste.
Energy & Emission Reduction with “Intelligent Re-Start” Software
Juniper’s products undergo extensive testing during manufacturing to ensure consistent quality prior to shipment. Incidents like unexpected power outages, operator errors, golden unit failures or partner manufacturing shutdowns can significantly impact testing and increase energy usage, as re-initialization of any testing already in progress would be required.
With the development of our “Intelligent Re-Start” software, Juniper automatically recovers and resumes testing from the last passing sequence, eliminating the need to reinitialize and restart testing from the beginning. Since the software deployment at our contract manufacturing sites last December, we estimate the software has already reduced energy use by 80,000 kilowatts of electricity and emissions by 17 metric tons of carbon dioxide. Improving manufacturing efficiency by avoiding needless re-testing saves energy and helps the environment.
Conserving energy savings is not the only way Juniper is investing in our planet’s future, we are also focused on electronic waste (e-waste) avoidance. E-waste is any electrical or electronic equipment that has been discarded. It is particularly dangerous due to toxic chemicals like beryllium, cadmium, mercury and lead, which pose serious environmental risks to our soil, water, air and wildlife.
Prevention of E-Waste Avoidance
Last summer, a single impassioned Junivator, Paddy Berry, recognized the potential to reduce e-waste, reducing items such as power cords, serial converters, and console cables. His simple “‘go green” idea has now spawned a major cross-functional initiative to relook at Juniper’s ordering model with the aim of reducing unnecessary accessories, reducing packaging materials in Juniper shipments, reducing the carbon footprint of every Juniper product and improving overall customer satisfaction.
It All Counts
As our society relies more and more on networking and IT, it is imperative that Juniper and our industry peers embed sustainability throughout their businesses. Earth Day is the perfect occasion to underscore the importance of continuous investments for a sustainable future. Our recent initiatives to save energy in the manufacturing processes and to reuse products demonstrate a commitment to emissions reduction and a circular economy, Juniper takes the view that it all counts when it comes to investing in our planet.
