At HPE Juniper Networking, sustainability is not just a goal—it’s a collective responsibility. As plastic pollution continues to threaten ecosystems and communities worldwide, we are accelerating our efforts to reduce plastic packaging across our operations, supply chain, and products. With 99% of plastic derived from fossil fuels and over 400 million tons of plastic waste generated globally each year—less than 10% of which is recycled—we aim to reduce plastic packaging through quick and targeted efforts.
Our plastic reduction milestones and 2025 targets
We are proud to report significant progress toward our plastic reduction goals:
- Reduced our annual use of plastics by more than 380,000 lbs.
- From 2022 through 2024, we’ve reduced our plastic use in product packaging by more than 35% (by weight)
- We are on track to reduce it further by an additional 100,000 lbs. by the end of this year as we continue to pursue an ambitious 40% (by weight) reduction in total plastic use by 2025 compared to our 2022 baseline
- At the same time, our annual consumption of virgin plastic in packaging is also reduced by 270,000 lbs. during this period:
- We are on track to meet our ambitious target of reducing virgin plastic in our product packaging by 80% (by weight) by the end of 2025
Sustainable packaging in action
Our packaging transformation is driven by innovation and collaboration within our engineering, product management, and supply chain teams:
- 12 New Product Introductions (NPIs) now feature sustainable packaging designs
- 147 accessory parts have transitioned to plastic-free packaging, preventing 19,000 lbs. of plastic waste
- Five legacy products are being converted to sustainable packaging by year’s end
- Multiple optics and cable products are moving to bulk and paper packaging solutions
- We are actively working with suppliers to develop paper- and fiber-based alternatives that maintain product protection while reducing environmental impact
Plastic-free culture at HPE Juniper Networking
For Plastic Free July, we are highlighting corporate efforts to eliminate plastic to-go containers, cups, and single-use bottles across our offices. These have been replaced with aluminum cans and other sustainable materials.
This initiative extends to internal meetings and team events, reinforcing our commitment to a plastic-free workplace culture.
Transitioning to used and sustainable materials
We recognize that some packaging still requires plastic due to performance or safety standards. In these cases, we prioritize recycled and recyclable plastics and continue to explore bamboo- and paper-based solutions to reduce weight and carbon emissions from logistics.
Our roadmap includes transitioning our flagship optics products to sustainable packaging and expanding sustainable bulk packaging for access points (APs) and optics.
Sustainability beyond packaging
Plastic reduction is one pillar of our broader sustainability strategy that encompasses:
- Carbon footprint reduction through energy-efficient product design and operations
- Power efficiency improvements across our hardware portfolio
- Circular economy principles that extend product life and reduce waste
We believe that sustainability is a shared journey. By leading with transparency and innovation, we aspire to industry-wide action.
