We’re happy to report that the first phase of IP over DWDM (IPoDWDM) testing has been successfully completed in collaboration between Turkcell and Juniper Networks. The tests were conducted over a 248 km distance between Turkcell’s two major data centers: Avrupa and Gebze.
IPoDWDM is a technology enabling customers to decouple the transponder function from the traditional DWDM systems and then to implement that very function right inside the transceiver itself. In addition to simplifying the infrastructure and management, it also saves lots of money and lowers the TCO dramatically, as the transponders usually are the most expensive part of the traditional DWDM systems. The latest IPoDWDM technology can have up to 400G ZR/ZR+ transceivers with DWDM transponder built right inside them, which in general, are called ‘coherent transceivers’.
During the tests, Juniper’s coherent transceivers, that enable the integration of DWDM architecture with routers through the open transponder feature of DWDM equipment, were used on Juniper Networks™ PTX Series devices. It was observed that ZR+ modules operated seamlessly with third-party DWDM systems on the defined frequencies. After the accessibility tests were conducted, the scope was further expanded, confirming that access was successfully achieved in a multivendor environment as well. In summary, we successfully completed a full test of 400G connection using Juniper’s coherent transceivers, which is currently the highest possible rate achievable using this technology.
IPoDWDM technology is expected to play a key role in metro network solutions, particularly with the widespread adoption of 5G technologies and beyond, as well as cloud and IoT systems. The critical role of this technology is integrating the DWDM transponder unit with the coherent transceivers, considerably reducing the high cost of the DWDM transponders and simplifying the infrastructure.
Turkcell and Juniper initiated these tests to develop an alternative solution to address the increasing data traffic demands, optimize energy and equipment usage, and simplify network architectures. Prof. Dr. Vehbi Çağrı Güngör, CTO of Turkcell, said, “At Turkcell, with our innovative approach, we continue to challenge traditional architectures and take steps toward the future. IPoDWDM technology brings a sustainable and innovative perspective to traditional WDM and router architectures, offering us opportunities to develop new approaches.”
According to Raj Yavatkar, SVP and CTO at Juniper Networks, “Through 400G ZR+ technology, this collaboration with Turkcell marks a major advance, reinforcing our partnership for the future. It introduces new alternatives with simplified architectures to align with sustainability principles and promote openness in DWDM networks that were traditionally locked for years.”
