Many of our customers are reporting a dramatic increase in the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in their enterprise and industrial environments. As of 2023, reports indicate that more than 75 billion IoT devices will be installed by 2025 and that integrating these devices into business processes improves efficiency by 83%.
To remotely manage a network with a mix of large scale IoT, data and voice devices, you need to be able to pinpoint their accurate location, conduct asset tracking and quickly resolve network issues. But in heterogeneous Wi-Fi networks, connecting IoT and mobile data or voice devices can be problematic. For example, delays in data delivery to and from IoT devices often lead to inconsistent or unavailable real-time metrics and packet loss on voice communication mobile devices can lead to poor user experiences.
This is why Juniper Networks and Zebra Technologies have partnered to deliver edge intelligence with client-centered insights.
Juniper and Zebra’s Joint Solution for IoT Edge Intelligence
The joint solution delivers secure and high-performing experiences for Zebra handheld devices with unmatched visibility and insights. Zebra Wireless Insights and the Marvis client, installed on a Zebra handheld device, collect telemetry and send it to the Juniper Mist™ AI cloud, which in turn offers real-time insights into the end-to-end user experience in an intuitive dashboard.
Figure 1: The Juniper and Zebra Joint Solution for IoT Edge Intelligence
This joint solution provides unprecedented visibility into Zebra devices, network health and root-cause identification for network remediation and assured end-user experiences.
Highlights of this solution include:
- Actionable insights with rich telemetry data from Juniper Access Points (APs) and Zebra devices, processed by the Juniper Mist™ AI engine and displayed in the Mist dashboard.
- Correlation of network and client events to pinpoint the exact location of performance degradation, dramatically reducing mean time to repair (MTTR).
- Wi-Fi and Patented virtual Bluetooth® LE (vBLE) technology to enhance Zebra offerings, such as Zebra Device Tracker and Juniper Mist Asset Visibility to easily find missing Zebra Android mobile devices, even after they have lost power.
Solution Benefits and Insights
Insights from the Marvis client and Zebra Wireless Insights are presented on the Mist dashboard for customers to review network and device issues in one place. The two solutions work together to ingest telemetry from the device and network and provide insights into:
- Device connection states and events
- Roaming analysis
- Voice analysis
Connection States and Events
The solution lets users view details about client connection and disconnection events. For example, you can decipher what happens when a device tries to connect, roam or disconnect. With this information, it becomes easier to understand device connection performance and if any issues are arising that may need addressing with APs or device configurations.
Roaming Analysis
Zebra Wireless Insights provides information as to what triggered a roam, such as signal strength or an unintentional switch to a different radio band. This information allows users to quickly reconnect and prevent unintentional roaming in the future.
Voice Analysis
With voice analysis, you can view and analyze information about voice calls made using Zebra devices. The Mist UI provides details about when the call began and ended, along with the call performance. A summary of voice events is also available, both during the call and after it ends.
This information provides all of the data you need to rapidly improve voice quality and the user experience.
Figure 2: Service Level Expectations (SLEs) for Connection States, Roaming Events and Voice Analysis
Using these insights, Juniper Mist AI provides a clear overview of network performance and user experience, presented as Service Level Expectations (SLEs) in Figure 2. SLEs display an at-a-glance view of the network health and the root cause of a network issue, which drastically simplifies troubleshooting.
Furthermore, the Marvis® Virtual Network Assistant transforms how IT teams interact with the network by answering questions in natural language to quickly troubleshoot network issues or find documentation, while Marvis Actions proactively alerts IT teams to issues and recommends actions or automatically fixes the problem.
The insights provided by Mist AI deliver exceptional customer benefits, such as:
- A 90% reduction in wireless related trouble tickets for ServiceNow
- An 85% reduction in onsite tech visits for Gap Inc.
- An 85% reduction in operational expenditures according to ACG Research
