I know. Using automotive metaphors to describe networking has been a cliché since the days of “The Information Superhighway.” But I can’t help but get “revved up” by Juniper’s latest award for an innovation that has the potential to improve the power efficiency of network infrastructure by up to 70%.
Juniper’s Power Steering innovation was recently awarded Deutsche Telekom’s Green Future Best Practice Award in the “Innovation/Game Changer” category at the 2024 Telekom Campus Fair event in Bonn, Germany.
The Green Future Best Practice Awards recognize and promote best practices from DT partner companies, like Juniper, that are driving a more sustainable and more climate-friendly industry with initiatives that support their strategic environmental targets. Yes, this award is from our customer and partner, and it focuses on an innovation that benefits Deutsche Telekom and the rest of the industry in a meaningful way.
Juniper’s innovative Power Steering demonstrates our commitment to sustainability by monitoring traffic levels and dynamically aligning power needs with demand, optimizing resource utilization, and creating cost savings for network operators.
The power behind Power Steering
Similar to how some vehicles shut off while stationary to conserve power, Power Steering similarly puts network infrastructure components into “sleep mode” during periods of inactivity. The result: Power Steering has the potential to improve network power efficiency by up to 70% by making recommendations to network operators to deactivate unused or underutilized network infrastructure during periods of low demand.
The technology involves monitoring network usage trends and making recommendations regarding when network links and infrastructure components could be turned off (and of course turned back on again in advance of demand). Recommendations could include rerouting traffic to free up capacity that can then be reduced, turning off links including optics, and turning down underutilized components within the network infrastructure. By intelligently aligning network capacity to power consumed, Juniper’s Power Steering enables operators to reduce network power consumption, which in turn reduces the carbon emissions generated by the energy suppliers that power the network.
Sustainability gamechanger
Although in the early stages, we expect to roll out this innovation as it matures across relevant products within our portfolio, and of course share with the wider industry too.
I’m truly proud of Juniper to be honored with this award from Deutsche Telekom, and I’m grateful to the Junivators who made it possible. The award demonstrates how Juniper is embedding sustainability principles in its solutions, which truly is a gamechanger for network operators.
Sustainability isn’t a destination, it’s a journey. We’ll continue this important work, actively collaborating with our customers and partners to deliver a positive impact on the planet.
