We’re thrilled to announce the official validation of Juniper Networks’ near-term and net-zero targets by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the globally recognized climate standards and guidance organization. Aligned with the Paris Agreement’s climate goals, these science-based targets set Juniper on a clearly defined pathway to reduce company emissions, making climate action the cornerstone of our commitment to a more sustainable future.
Targets and actions
Our short-term target is to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% and a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 (2022 baseline). We are leveraging impactful decarbonization strategies to lower Scope 1 emissions as much as possible. Juniper is proud to be a part of the increasing global demand for renewable energy. Our Bengaluru site in India already operates on 90% renewable energy and we recently announced an agreement to develop a new solar plant that will power a significant portion of Juniper’s electricity demand in North America when it comes online in 2026. .
Our Scope 3 emissions reduction initiatives include incorporation of renewable energy in the contract manufacturing processes, development of software solutions in our products to allow our customers to monitor and optimize energy use, and a shift to shipping more product by water freight instead of emissions-intensive air freight.
These actions are part of our roadmap to drive a 90% reduction in absolute emissions across all scopes by 2040. This transition is only possible through continued investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and collaboration with partners, suppliers, customers, and the industry. And as part of our ongoing commitment to accelerate climate action, Juniper will be represented at the 2024 New York Climate Week.
Great strides, more work ahead
While we celebrate the validation of our climate targets, we acknowledge the real challenge lies ahead, especially in tackling Scope 3 emissions. But Juniper has a history of landmark innovations. From pioneering routers that shaped the internet’s growth to ongoing advancements in silicon, systems, and software, we are driven by a culture of excellence in knowledge, collaboration, and human progress. As we confront climate change head-on, we recognize the urgency for our transformative solutions to extend to the climate challenge.
